Tips to help lay down your edges without damage

Updated: May 25, 2023

Having smooth, laid edges can elevate your appearance and give you a put-together look. However, even though laid edges look great, they can also cause buildup, flakes, and breakage over time. To tame your baby hairs and minimize damage, follow these four easy and inexpensive edge laying steps:

Step 1: Wet your head before you lay down your edges

The first step you should take before laying your edges is to wet your hair with a quick spritz from a spray bottle. Keep in mind, you want damp hair, but not dripping wet. Wetting your hair will allow you to shape your baby hairs into a smooth, sleek style.

Step 2: Moisturize

Applying a moisturizing product will help you smooth down your edges without drying them out, which will help minimize breakage and flakes. You can use products like shea or cocoa butter, castor oil, or an alcohol-free gel.

Step 3: Style

You can use your fingers for this step, but for added precision, you can use a toothbrush or a boar bristle brush to lay down your edges and sweep back into your desired style.

Step 4: Set your edges in place

Now that you've got your edges laid, wrap a silk or satin scarf around your entire head to secure the shape while your hair dries. This process should only take around 15-20 minutes, giving you time to finish getting ready.

If you want an even smoother look, you can start this process at night, wrap your head before bed, and wake up to soft, sleek edges.

Sincerely,

Chavela Hill
